Getting there is half the fun?

Whoever said that getting there is half the fun obviously did not have kids. While our kids really did quite a good job travelling, I would hardly say the trip itself was fun. In an effort to give full disclosure, not just smiling perfection, let me give you a glimpse into what it’s like to travel halfway around the world with four kids. We arrived at Dulles/Washington Airport about two and a half hours before our flight so we would have plenty of time. Side note: we fit all this stuff, plus seven people (including two car seats and a booster seat) in our minivan! Two of those suitcases may or may not be full of books… Now picture us carrying/pulling all of that luggage into the airport only to find that the check-in line was horrendously long. So here we are: two adults, four kids, 6 suitcases to check, 1 suitcase to carry-on, 2 backpacks, 1 briefcase, 1 diaper bag, and 2 kids travel backpacks, waiting in line for an hour. I think the kids were more patient than I was!

House Hunters International: Minsk, Belarus

(We were given a $1150 budget by the Fulbright Program) House #1: Don’t judge a book by it’s cover We started with a 3 bedroom 1 bath apartment on the edge of the city center, close to shops and a trolley stop. The outside of the building was run down, with peeling paint, and rusty metal doors and window frames. The courtyard was overgrown by bushes and weeds. I was sure we were in the heart of the ghetto, but Vadim and Mila assured me that it was a very safe part of town. We entered the building through a heavy rusty door into a dimly lit hallway. At the end was an elevator big enough for approximately 1.3 people. However, when we reached the apartment, I was pleasantly surprised to find a brightly lit, clean space. Parquet floors and high ceilings gave a feeling of extra space. Most of the doors opened off of a central entryway, including a well stocked kitchen with a full size fridge. Where? Why? How?

When Steve got a call asking if he would be interested in a semester in Belarus, I had no idea where it was, but we pretty quickly agreed that OF COURSE we would go! (He explains a bit more about the Fulbright award here: https://www.iue.edu/blogs/hss/2017/08/09/fulbright-in-belarus/) WHERE? Belarus is in Eastern Europe, between Poland and Russia. There is a Belarusian language, but their official language is Russian. We have been working on our Russian a bit this summer, but I have to admit that I have not made much progress! We will be living in the capital city, Minsk, with a population similar to Philadelphia. There are castles and thousand year old villages to visit, and plenty of nature to explore. See that big rhombicuboctahedron? That's the library. If you know our family at all, you probably know that any place with a library like that excites us! WHY? A Fulbright Award is extremely prestigious, and quite simply, Steve would have been crazy to turn it down
